I did this bowl for a black and white themed show coming up at Artel in Pensacola.
I formed the bowl with plaster cloth and after it was dry I painted with encaustic and used a bit of gauze to add some more texture. I also used gauze and encaustic to secure the piece of driftwood to the bowl and then added seashells on top of the gauze.
I did add some bit of silver here and there but it is hard to see in the photos

Just a quick post with another little driftwood encaustic piece.
The base is an 8 by 8 inch cradled panel with a small piece of driftwood secured to it.
The octopus and all coral in front are made with paper clay and painted with encaustic.
The red fan coral behind the octopus is made from sisal rope and painted with encaustic.
This was a very hard piece to photograph and he looks much better in person. The octopus kinda hides in all the coral - which is of course what octopus do!!!

I have been working on this one for awhile now - another big driftwood piece.
The piece measures 28 inches long at its longest, 13.5 inches tall at its tallest and about 10 inches wide at the base with a couple more inches width in the branch sticking out.
Everything is painted with encaustic - even the wood itself. I first painted the driftwood for 2 reasons - one it helps to preserve the wood and two it gives an encaustic wax base to help attach all the pieces to it. I painted all the pieces before attaching them to the driftwood using encaustic paint and I also used some pan pastels on the vase and the seaweed (green fronds).
The vase was made with paper clay over a glass jar. I added green leaf designs with pan pastels and some gold decorations with a stencil, encasutic and then pan pastels.
The Octopus was formed with paper covered wire and plaster cloth.
The red coral is sisal rope, frayed out and painted.
The green seaweed fronds are paper covered rope with the paper frayed out and painted.
I have some more vases started for future pieces made with just plaster cloth and am thinking of trying to do some sea turtles. Now I just need to get to the beach and find me some good pieces of driftwood.
