Garden Sanctuary

Hallo,

Finished off another one in my Bee series this last weekend. This one is 15 by 22 inches in a black float frame.

I started with a cyanotype using flowers and weeds from my yard and garden onto watercolor paper.

I then glued it to a cradled wood panel and added several layers of encaustic medium. I colored some of it in with pan pastels and then decided to paint them with encaustic instead. I added some ferns using a stencil and then added the honeycomb/beeswax with a stencil also.

The bees were done with a hot pen with a very fine tip - from a photo printed onto tissue paper to use as an under drawing.

I added a few touches of pan pastels on top of the honeycomb.

This one will go to a couple shows and be available on my Etsy shop in the early fall.

   Have  great week!!!

Bees in the flower beds

Hallo,

Another in my 'Bees' series finished off this weekend. This painting is 11 by 14 inches.

I started this painting with a cyanotype print and mounted it to a cradled panel. I then painted it with encaustic - the flowers I used pan pastels on.

The bees were taken from photos and printed onto tissue paper to use as an under drawing and then I painted them with encaustic using a fine tip hot pen.

I am debating putting this one in a float frame but for now the sides are painted black.

   Have a great week!!!

Bee Buzz II to VI

Hallo,

Finished off a few paintings in the studio today, including these 10 by 10 inch hexagon panels.

These paintings all started off as cyanotype prints  which I mounted to the cradled panel. I then painted them with encaustic wax and used a bit of pan pastels also.

There are 6 in this little series now with some bigger - regular shaped panels yet to come.

Dragonfly Dreams

 Hallo,

A quick post today with another cyanotype and encaustic painting, I started with a cyanotype and colored portions with pastels. I glued the print to a cradled wood panel and added encaustic and more pan pastels in layers with the encaustic.

On the left side I built up some interesting texture and added some silver foil.

The dragonfly is one of my photos that I printed out onto tissue paper and added the blue/turquoise/purple with a fine tipped hot pen.

I was pretty please with how this one came out!!! Course I love dragonflies!!!!

Winter Blues

Hallo,

A second cyanotype with encaustic painting today. I did this one pretty much the same as my last post. Since the colored pencil trees didnt show up as well as I would have liked, this time I painted the trees in the background with encaustic to make them show up better. Now I wonder if they dont overshadow the white and blue cyanotype trees.....

I have 2 more in this series to finished off, so maybe I can find a happy middle ground...

'Winter Garden'

Hallo,
I have a cyanotype encaustic mixed media painting for you today - that's a mouthful eh??
This painting is 12W by 24H. I started with a base of encaustic medium on a cradled wood panel and then added a couple layers of white encaustic paint.
I had done several cyanotypes onto tea bag paper which is thin enough to embed into the wax easily, but the paper is strong enough to survive the cyanotype rinsing unlike alot of thinner papers.
I embedded the tea bag cyanotype in several layers with encaustic medium in between.
Next I added some dried weeds of the same type that were used to make the cyanotype print to start with. I embedded them into the top layer of the wax and added some light layers of the wax over the top to seal while keeping the textures.
Next, I went in with white encaustic paint and added 'snow' and used a bit of a stencil in the top corners. I added a bit of gold oil stick to accent the stencil and the edges just ever so slightly.
I really like how this one turned out!! It will go to a blizzard themed show later this week.

Great Grandparents

Hallo,
Something sorta new for you today - still playing with cyanotypes though. I used an old photo of my Great Grandparents - wedding photo circa 1889 - made the transparency and used it to make a cyanotype print - first photo.
Second photo - I bleached the original print back with washing soda and then toned in green tea.
Third photo is after I colored the toned print in with colored pencils - I went a bit darker with the colors since I knew I was going to add encaustic which would mute the colors just a touch.
The last photo is the finished painting - I added several layers of encaustic medium(without pigment) and then added encaustic paint (encaustic medium with pigments) in spots for more texture and depth. Lastly I added some pigment stick to the edges and ground by their feet.
I have a few more old family photos that I will probably do similar paintings of in the future.

Cyanotype - double exposure 3

  Hallo,
Set # 3 for you today.
First photo =  wet cyanotype print done with weeds and flowers, exposed, rinsed and let dry - then bleached back a bit with washing soda, rinsed and let dry.
Second photo = Coated again with cyanotype solution, added flowers and leaves stragically over spots I wanted to keep and exposed to sunlight, rinsed and let dry.
I really love how you can still see the original print in the background even in the parts you didn't preserve by placing stuff over them on the second pass. I really adds alot of depth to the prints.

Cyanotype - double exposure 1

Hallo,
More experiments with cyanotypes. This set is a before and after doing a double exposure.
The first photo shows a print that I did as a wet cyanotype in the normal manner - that is coated my watercolor paper with the cyanotype solution, layed down some plants, added some watercolor crystals and sprayed with vinegar , exposed to sunlight, then rinsed to stop the reaction and let the print dry - then I bleached it back just a bit with washing soda and let it dry again( I forgot to get a pic before I bleached).
The second photo is after I did another exposure.
I took the first print after bleaching  and added a coat of the cyanotype solution and added leaves and plants again - larger ones this time and placed them over parts of the original print that I liked best(to preserve them) - exposed to sunlight and then rinsed as usual.
I really like the effect and I have several more examples to show you over the next couple days.
   Have a great day!!!

Toning Iris cyanotypes

    Hallo,
Another set of toned cyanotype prints to show you today. The first photo is of the original print which turned out too dark. The second photo is after I bleached out some of the blue with washing soda.
The third and fourth photos are the print toned in green tea and wine tannins.
I had 3 prints of the same iris photo that were over exposed - just to clarify.
