Sunrise at Eaton Ranch

Hallo,

  Another painting from my workshop in Wyoming in early sept. This painting combines several of my photos with encaustic wax.

   The base photo was printed onto cardstock and glued to a cradled wood panel - the sunrise with horses in the background. I added a few layers of wax and added details/texture with wax to the background. 

  The photo of the appaloosa was printed onto tissue paper and embedded into the wax.

  I then added a lot of texture to the foreground and added details to the horse.

    Lastly I added the texture in gold to  the bottom inch of the painting(many layers of wax. Added a line of gold foil and then carved in the little horse brand and filled it in with black.

Companionship

Hallo,

   I have a photo encaustic painting for you today. This is one of the 4 paintings I did at a workshop in Wyoming in early sept.

   I used a photo of the pile of rusty horseshoes as my background  and then added several layers of encaustic.

  The horse photo was printed onto tissue paper and embedded into the encaustic.

  I then painted with encaustic to add depth and texture.

Katie

Hallo,

  Well, I tried to put a pic of this finished painting at the top and THEN do the progression of the painting, but Blogger wouldn't let me......SO if you would rather not see the progression, just scroll all the way to the bottom. The last 4 pics are the finished painting.

   The first pic is the photo that I did this painting from - Katie is my SIL's horse. I isolated her in an edit program and printed it out in black and white onto tissue paper.(second photo)

  The third pic is the background that I did first. I am painting with encaustic as usual.

I used the photo on tissue paper as an under drawing and added encaustic to Katie with hot pens and a couple of fine tips.

  There is about 27 hours of painting into just Katie herself and another 6 to 8 between the background and finishing the bottom with grasses.

   The painting is 11 by 14 inches.

'Oh so pretty"

  Another photo encaustic painting for you today. 

   I feel I should explain photo encaustic just to clarify. Basically, it means a photo was used along with encaustic medium and /or encaustic paint. In its simplest form, a photo is glued to a board and then 1 or more layers of encaustic medium (without pigment) are added. These paintings of mine are pretty much at the other end of the spectrum. I use the photo more as an under drawing and the photo itself is completely covered with encaustic paint (medium with pigments added). I love being able to add textures and change the colors of the original photo if I want.

    These 2 photos are from the the many ones I took at Eaton Ranch. Specifically this horse is Forest whom we got to do a photo shoot with. He is very photogenic!!!

   I started with a background of blues with splatters of bronze, blue, turquoise and white. A couple layers of medium to smooth the painting back out again - the photos with lay nicer to embed on a less textured surface. Both photos were printed out onto tissue paper. 

   I started with the top photo and added alot of detail and texture and then smothed him out with a couple layers of medium - to smooth the way for the next photo but also to push that photo into the background a bit (to add some depth to the painting...)

    I then embedded the second photo and did all his details and texture. All the detail work on both photos was done with a very fine tip hot pen. Total hot pen work on this painting was about 6 hours' worth as the studio yesterday. 

   The last part of the painting was adding back a few more splatters and a bit of pan pastels in the foreground to give Forest something to stand on.

Ranchhand

Hallo,

  I finally got back into my studio after my Wyoming adventure, to finish off this last painting from the workshop I took at Eaton Ranch with Clare O'Neill. 

  This was a photo encaustic workshop hosted by Eaton Ranch. We got to see the herd wrangled in from the mountain pastures every morning, could ride every day if we wished (I only rode twice - it had been over 15 years and 2 knee replacements since I had ridden so I was just a 'bit' sore after the second ride.....)

If you ever wanted a 'Dude Ranch' experience, I would highly recommend Eaton Ranch!!! They do it right!!!

And if you want an awesome photo encaustic class then Clare O'Neill is the person to go to!!! I had such a wonderful time my week at the ranch with this class!!! I have enough painting fodder to last me a LONG time!!! I must have taken over 2000 pictures. (And another 8 or 900 during the week I spent at my brothers place near Centennial Wyoming !!)

   Anyhow the first 2 pictures are of the finished painting. The next 2 pictures are the photos I worked from. 

   The background photo was taken somewhere along Lone Bear Road/ Ttt Ranch Road. I printed it out and glued it to my wood panel and then covered it with several layers of encaustic as a base. I worked on the sky first and added some color and texture to the clouds while I was deciding what to add to the picture in the foreground. I had a few good pics of antelope from the same area as the background photo, but the colors were too similar, and the antelope just blended in too much. (Although I will probably try one in the future). 

  I printed out the horse - photo taken at Eaton Ranch - onto tissue paper and embedded that into the encaustic on the painting. The tissue paper sinks into the encaustic wax and pretty much disappears, leaving just your printed image (I did isolate the horse before I printed).

  I did some initial coloring with some wax crayons - which is represented by the last photo, mostly grasses in the foreground. That was all I had time for up in Wyoming.

   Yesterday I got out my hot pens and spent several hours adding color and texture to the hills and trees in the background - to the point where none of the original photo showed any more (I used the photo more as an under drawing to paint over) Last but not least I did a couple more hours work with the hot pen adding in the grasses and a bit of detail and texture to the horse too. Total all hot pen work was about 5 hours' worth, on top of what I had already done.

Hallo,

 Two more paintings from my photoencaustic class in Wyoming. These are both 8 by 10 inches and I will probably put them into a couple of black float frames.

   The photo I used for both of these is the third photo - which I isolated the horse and printed onto tissue paper to embed into the encaustic wax.

  The bottom portions of both paintings has a shellac burn on it and I added shadows and shading around the horse with pan pastels and sennlier oil crayons.

  I have one more painting using the same photo but it needs to be finished off when I get back into my studio(probably next weekend).

'Fairy Grey"

  Quick post as I get myself in gear for another Monday.

   I finished this sweet little painting off over the weekend. This painting took my about 10 hours to do total all - about 9 hours of it with the fine tip hot pen. Painting is 5 by 7 inches, encaustic wax.

  The first 2 pics are the finished painting - in and out of the float frame.

  Next I start with pics of the progression of this painting . After about 4 layers of encaustic medium, I embedded the black and white photo and covered it with another couple layers of wax, I then did a thin transparent(semi) layer of off white as a base and then started detailing with the hot pen.

  The photo ends up completely covered but it gives me a place to start, like a drawing would.

Wind Runner

Hallo,

   I have had some horse photos in my stash for while waiting their turn and so this one I finished off this last weekend. 

    I did an encaustic background first and then added the horse - printed onto rice paper. The rice paper virtually disappears into the wax leaving the image to be the star.

  I then added more encaustic for color and texture and some oil sticks too. 

   The second picture is the finished one this time around, although I really like the first picture was too so there might have to be one similar to that in the future. One thing is for sure - you will be seeing more horses. I have a photo shoot planned for the first weekend in April with a friend of mines horses.
