Raku Graffiti I

 Hallo,

Playing with another small series based on the 'faux raku' technique. I am really loving the spurt in creativity that the online class I am taking is dishing out!!!!

I am taking an online class  called 'Painting with Fire' from Essence of Mulranny. It is a year long class - once a week. And you can still join in because even though it has already started, once you sign up you will have access to  ALL the classes, forever.

This is a 10 by 20 inch painting is based on that technique - and of course these colors are just my style too!!!

Garden wall

Hallo,

One last faux ivory technique painting for you (at least for now).

I used a brick wall stencil for the first layer and accented with some line carving and walnut ink. I then added a couple layers of plain medium to make the painting smooth again for the next stencil layer which is the leaves which I did in green and again accented with walnut inks.

The flowers are also encaustic - I had an old painting that I had planned on reworking but liked the colors, and the wax had beads and foil embedded into the wax too. So I heated sections up and pulled up lines of wax and rolled them into flowers while they were still warm - I used a mini iron to melt/attach them to the board.

I then added some accents with gold foil and painted the sides of the painting with gold metallic paint.

This little painting is 8 by 8 inches.

Leading Ladies

Hallo,

Another finished painting in the faux ivory and vintage style collage realm.

12 by 12 inches by 2 inches deep. I used some graphite rubbings of leaves on rice paper and then coated with wax for base layers. Then  I some washi papers and a vintage photo printed on rice paper.  Next was the bronze colored vintage style ribbon and then I used a couple stencils for the faux ivory technique. Lastly some walnut ink and gold foil.

In other words a bit of this and that and then a bit more.....

I painted the sides in a gold metallic acrylic paint.

I haven't done much collage work as a whole so the experimenting is fun but am still trying to find how to balance the composition and lights and darks ect....

I eventually want to try a few paintings using old family photos.....

Floral Ivory 2.0

Hallo,

Well  as I sat on the couch last evening, this painting kept coming up in my mind, nagging me. She was talking to me and telling me that she wasnt done yet... so todays studio time was spent adding a few touches, and I think she is happy now.

I started by carving a few lines around the set of leaves in ivory (the top layer of leaves) and used some walnut ink to rub into the lines I made - which was pretty good all by it self ....just not quite.

I next did some carving on the leaves themselves for the 'veins' of the leaves and then rubbed in some green oil stick and took off the excess. The green matches up with some of the green tones in the rolled flowers and just seemed to add alot more depth.

    All for today.

Floral Ivory

Hallo,
I have a ton of photos for you today -  put a photo of the finished painting at the start and then the progession of this painting - and then the last 3 photos are again of the finished painting.

The first picture shows the backround of a painting that I decided to redo - I kinda liked the colors and the wax has small beads and copper and gold metallic foil embedded into it so I decided to make some flower forms out of it. I heated sections at a time and pulled up small strips while the wax was warm and rolled them into flowers.

I repainted the board and started a faux ivory type technique on it but added some papers and an image of a victorian woman for collage.
I continued with the faux ivory by using a stencil to make it look like a brick wall - reminding me of some of the old buildings we saw in Italy many years ago.
I smoothed that layer out a little with a layer of plain medium and then used another stencil - a leaf type with a greenish gray color to make 'shadow' leaves. Then I added more of the ivory encaustic with the leaf stencil.

Then I started adding my flowers, and more flowers, and more.....may have over done it??
Last but not least I added gold leaf foil in several spots for just a touch of shine and glitz.

I am really loving the encaustic online course I am taking - the faux ivory is one of the techniques I have learned .....

Mirror, mirror

Hallo,

Another encaustic mixed media collage for you today and I used the same main image and mostly the same papers as yesterdays.

This painting is 10H by 8W and I finished the sides also with gold paint.

The first pic today is just of the collage and the second pic is the final version with encaustic and the faux ivory encaustic, gold leaf and the same ribbon as I used yesterday.

1923

Hallo,

Back with more fun from my 'Painting with Fire ' classes. Todays painting combines 2 classes - a class on collage and a class on faux looks - in this case faux ivory.

The main image is from a needlecraft magazine from 1923 from my long hoarded stash (although I did take photos first and saved them to my computer) and then various pretty papers - including some graphite rubbings onto rice paper and coated with wax from a You tube video by Shari Repole.

Added several layers of wax and then did the faux ivory technique with encaustic, walnut ink and a bit of gold leaf. Used an Art deco type stencil that I thought fit well with the 1920's picture and then another stencil to frame the '1923'

This painting is 20H by 16 W and I have finished the sides with metallic gold paint(nonencaustic).

The second pic is the collage portion before I started adding encaustic.

Another mixed media encaustic today - rubber stamps painted with watercolor and covered with several layers of clear encaustic and then several stencils with pan pastels.

This one is a bit more structured I guess is the word but was fun to do.
