Bee buzz I

Hallo,

  Starting a new small series with this painting. I used a cyanotype print (didn't color the flowers in). I then glued the print to a hexagon board panel and painted with encaustic. 

  I painted the bees with encaustic also, using a fine tip hot pen. I then added some color to the flowers around the bees with pan pastels.

  Look for a few more of these to come.

Terra Rustica I

Hallo,

   I have been playing with rust and patina techniques lately along with encaustic.

   I did a background of wax and thought I would like a mostly simple sky. Thought about doing something with the lines in the first pic but ended up covering them up. This was rusted metal over the was for the first picture.

  In the second photo I added some gold/green patina and the beginings of copper/blue patina and then added some more color to the sky.

The third picture is the patinas and rust.

   The fourth photo I toned down the sky's wildness a bit and started adding some lines with wax and my hot pen to define the mountains a bit.

  The last photo is the finished painting. I added a bit of color back into the sky and finished off some more defining lines of the mountains.

The painting is 11H by 14 W and I finished off the sides with black.

Reflections

Hallo,

  A couple new paintings for you today - 2 small 8 by 8 inch encaustic paintings.

   A bit of shellac with india ink and some gold leaf foil along with the encaustic.

   Trying to do a few pieces with minimal color palette and some white space.

Fall Creek

Hallo,

   I made a very quick weekend trip home to Nebraska in October to see family. I was hoping for a little fall color too but as you can see from the first pic, most of the color was already gone, and we had foggy, murky days to boot. 

  However this pic is from the creek near where I grew up and can well remember the glorious fall colors from growing up. We played all along this creek from this bridge about 3/4 mile south all along the windings through the fields to the bridge about 3/4 miles to the east ....

   The painting started with the first pic - a background of encaustic and oil sticks. 

  In the last 3 pics I broke out my hot pens to play with - have had them several years, just haven't really played with them much, so will be doing several paintings just to get some practice with them. 

  I am really missing fall this year more than I usually do so I hope you are in the mood too as there are several more in the works.

Coral Sea Nebula

Windows to the Universe

 Hallo,
   Another Saturday playing in my studio...I started 2 pieces in cold wax, the first layers, and while they were drying a bit I did up 2 space nebula scenes.
   I love doing these as they all turn out so different. I am calling this one "Windows to the Universe" and it is 18 by 24 inches and painted onto a cradled board - 1 inch thick.
   The sides were burned with a torch before I started and look like a dark stained wood.
   Lots of blues and turquoise in this one and a pop of red. I did a shellac burn over the top which always makes it look sooo COOL!!!!
    Not too much going on here - lucky for us Harvey went west of us into Texas (not so lucky for Texas but hopefully everyone is safe and out of harms way!!)
   Cloudy and murky here today but no rain so far....

Dragon Nebula

Hallo,
   Well the pups have taken me on my morning walk and since I don't go to work till later today, I guess I need to get a bit of house cleaning done.....
   I was lazy for the weekend and other than a bit of yard work Saturday am I mainly read( a fiction book by Mercedes Lackley - rereading actually, and more reading on a new cold wax book I got - almost 2 inches thick and tons of great stuff) and Sunday spent some time working in my studio on a portrait that I am working on of my DD in cold wax and oils.
  I haven't attempted a portrait since High school and the 2 I did then were watercolor, so its a challenge. It is looking good so far but it is taking me  a LOOONNNGG time. There is a portrait themed show at Artel in Pensacola here the first part of July so am hopeful I will get done in time!!!
   Today painting that I am showing you is encaustic wax and shellac in another painting in what I guess I can call a series of nebulas - this is #3 - Dragon Nebula for the red dragon head that I can see in the upper right side.
  I have looked at this one a month or two trying to decide if it is done or not, since I like it but it didn't really 'feel' finished. Well I cant think of anything I want to really change about it so have called it done. (I can always come back to it later - and meanwhile someone might decide to take him home).
   Well better get my butt in gear and clean and then off to work - hot as blazes here in NW Florida today!!!!! Glad I don't work outside!!!!

Elephant sunset

Hallo,
  It has been one of those weeks that felt very busy but I really didn't accomplish much except get to work and walk the dogs.....so much for my not so big plans to get a bit of cleaning done each day......
   I had to walk my pups both with their chain collars back on today because my big boy took off after a cat yesterday and got away from me - twisting my knee rather painfully at the same time and then started barking loudly(he doesn't know any other type of barking I guess) at the poor guy whose yard he chases the cat into - fortunately I was close behind him and the guy was used to big dogs and didn't panic......so back to the chain poke collars for awhile - I cant have him getting away from me and neither my knee or shoulder can tolerate much yanking - walking is tough today....
  Anyway - another of my paintings with alcohol inks and stencils. I used a large elephant stencil with wood putty and then when it was dry I used the torch on the wood putty to give it some darker color.
   Next came the alcohol inks. When dry I added a layer of shellac and did a burn and more drying time. I taped off a row along the top and added encaustic wax above and below the taped off section and then added a small row of red microbeads.
  The last thing I did was to add resin to the part that I taped off.
   I really like how all these are turning out - another cool turtle one is up for you tomorrow.

Turtle ocean

Hallo,
  Another painting for you today with alcohol inks and wax. This one started with a turtle stencil and was done pretty much exactly like yesterdays. I colored the turtles and background with alcohol inks and then added a layer of shellac and did a burn.
  Once that was dry I added a couple layers of wax - with a row near the top taped off. Added the beads and the resin to the taped off areas and framed it in a black floating frame.

Mango Koi

Hallo,
  Been busy in the studio playing with alcohol inks and wax, and its soooo much fun - I had forgotten how vibrant the alcohol inks are!!!
  This piece started with a stencil of the koi fish and when it was dry I colored it with alcohol inks and then did the background.
  Once the inks dried - very quickly with alcohol inks - I added a layer of shellac, let it dry a bit and then did a burn.
   I then taped off an area near the top and added encaustic wax to the areas not taped off.
  Taped off a smaller row and added some red microbeads.
  Lastly I added resin to the area I initially taped off to seal it and to add a bit extra pop and shine.
  I framed it in a floating frame with gold edges and it is now for sale on my Vangoart site.
