Katie

Hallo,
Well, I tried to put a pic of this finished painting at the top and THEN do the progression of the painting, but Blogger wouldn't let me......SO if you would rather not see the progression, just scroll all the way to the bottom. The last 4 pics are the finished painting.
The first pic is the photo that I did this painting from - Katie is my SIL's horse. I isolated her in an edit program and printed it out in black and white onto tissue paper.(second photo)
The third pic is the background that I did first. I am painting with encaustic as usual.
I used the photo on tissue paper as an under drawing and added encaustic to Katie with hot pens and a couple of fine tips.
There is about 27 hours of painting into just Katie herself and another 6 to 8 between the background and finishing the bottom with grasses.
The painting is 11 by 14 inches.
All for today - Have a great New Years weekend!!!!

Big coiled basket.

Hallo,

I haven't gotten to the studio as much as I would like lately but still doing a bit of coiling while hanging out on the couch in the evenings.

I used a paper coil and hemp twine to wrap this one. The base is a wood wall hanging/decor item that I found at a thrift store.

I made the beads from platercloth wrapped over a paper straw, dipped in encaustic and then wrapped that with sari silk ribbon that had also been dipped in encaustic.

I used a metal bead/charm from a thrift store bracelet as a decoration.

The basket is about 14.5 inches round and 2.5 inches deep.

All for now - I hope everyone is having a very Blessed Holidays!!!

Purple and turquoise basket

Hallo,
Yet another basket to show you. I did started this one over Thanksgiving weekend while watching football games and finished it off in the car on the drive home.
I have been painting too but am doing a very detailed horse painting for my Sister in law - taking me a long time. Between having family in town for my Birthday weekend the end of October and this weekend - my painting time has been limited lately.
I used paper coil, hemp twine and some of the same beads from the last basket.
This basket is almost 8 inches round and about 3 inches deep.
These last 2 baskets will be going to the gallery this week - and maybe eventually up on my Etsy shop.
   Have a great day!!!

Labrinth Basket

Hallo,
Thanksgiving weekend the Hubby and I drove to spend the weekend with my Daughter, SIL and Grandbaby - about a 5 to 6 hour drive without stops depending on traffic.
Just like sitting on the couch in the evenings, I have to keep my hands busy.
The first picture is about an hour or hour and a half into this basket.
The base on this one is made of polymer clay that I molded into a steel desktop labyrinth that is patterned after the one inside the Chruch in Chartreuse France. I used a drill to make the holes to attach the coil. I used a paper coil and some hemp twine (1mm size).
The beads were made by molding plaster cloth over a paper straw and when it was dry I used strips of sari silk dipped in encaustic. The beads are a darker turquoise than what is in the cording with a touch of gold accents.
I worked on this on the drive to and finished it off our second evening at the Airbnb. It is about 2.5 inches deep and about 7 inches round.
All for today - Take Care.

Big red basket

Hallo,
Showing another big basket that I made for my  Daughter to use as a toy basket for the Grandbaby.
I am slowly using up my stash of yarn - this one took my stash of reds and oranges down quite a bit.
I used 3/4 inch rope and coiled with various yarns from maroon to shades of red and orange.
I tried something new with this one by adding a coil wrapping around the outside of the basket  at the end - I had more rope and if I would have stopped it would have been to short to do anything with so I decided to use it up.

Quick warm up pieces

Hallo,

We had Open House this weekend at the gallery where my art and studio are and I wanted to do some quick demo's as give aways after the demo.

I dont normally paint encuastic onto paper but it makes for a quick warm up project sometimes and easy for quick demos.

I used a heavy mixed media paper(next time I will probably use a heavy watercolor paper as it would be a bit more sturdy)

About 5 layers of encaustic and then added some texture with various things. I used oil stick for color and to accent the textures and then highlighted with some pan pastels.

Makes for a fun  way to warm up and get in the grove of painting, might be doing these more often.

Vase with leaves

Hallo

Another recent experiment to show you today. Encaustic doesnt adhere well to plastic or glass  or glazed ceramic. This old ceramic vase had some chips in it so I decided to play with some plastercloth and see what happened.

I covered the outside of the vase with plastercloth and let it dry for a few days and then did the encaustic painting over the top of the plastercloth. Over all it worked pretty well and I am pleased with the result. May have to try some more of these sometime.

Sweet little boxes

Hallo,

Just a quick little post to show off a couple little wooden boxes I experimented with a couple weeks ago.

The boxes are about 3 inches by 4 and half inch deep. I did a bit of encaustic painting on the tops and then painted the sides gold.

  Turned out kinda cute .

Hide and seek

Hallo,

Just a quick post with another little driftwood encaustic piece.

The base is an 8 by 8 inch cradled panel with a small piece of driftwood secured to it.

The octopus and all coral in front are made with paper clay and painted with encaustic.

The red fan coral behind the octopus is made from sisal rope and painted with encaustic.

This was a very hard piece to photograph and he looks much better in person. The octopus kinda hides in all the coral - which is of course what octopus do!!!

All for tonight - have a great week!!
