'Fairy Grey"

Hallo,

  Quick post as I get myself in gear for another Monday.

   I finished this sweet little painting off over the weekend. This painting took my about 10 hours to do total all - about 9 hours of it with the fine tip hot pen. Painting is 5 by 7 inches, encaustic wax.

  The first 2 pics are the finished painting - in and out of the float frame.

  Next I start with pics of the progression of this painting . After about 4 layers of encaustic medium, I embedded the black and white photo and covered it with another couple layers of wax, I then did a thin transparent(semi) layer of off white as a base and then started detailing with the hot pen.

  The photo ends up completely covered but it gives me a place to start, like a drawing would.

Leading Ladies

Hallo,

  Another finished painting in the faux ivory and vintage style collage realm. 

   12 by 12 inches by 2 inches deep. I used some graphite rubbings of leaves on rice paper and then coated with wax for base layers. Then  I some washi papers and a vintage photo printed on rice paper.  Next was the bronze colored vintage style ribbon and then I used a couple stencils for the faux ivory technique. Lastly some walnut ink and gold foil. 

   In other words a bit of this and that and then a bit more.....

   I painted the sides in a gold metallic acrylic paint.

  I haven't done much collage work as a whole so the experimenting is fun but am still trying to find how to balance the composition and lights and darks ect....

   I eventually want to try a few paintings using old family photos.....

Reflections on smoke and water

Hallo,

   Another painting for you in the same series as yesterdays 2 small ones. This one is 16 by 20 inches. 

  Minimal palette with some shellac and india ink and some gold leaf.

   The sides of the paintings in this series are all finished with gold acrylic paint.

Winter fence line

Hallo,

   Well I have been busy but not as much painting went on for a couple weeks - I had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder and yes I am right handed. 

   This painting had the base layers of white and blue on before my surgery and the rest of the painting was done left handed, one handed and with a hot pen and a couple tips - mostly one that has a very fine tip light the old fountain type ink pens that you dipped into a bottle of ink before writing. That tip is wonderful for detail but it does take longer - especially when you are one handed and limited to your nondominant hand :)

  I am pleased with how it turned out though. The first 2 pics are of the finished painting and the others start at the beginning and shows how the painting progressed.

  It has been 3 weeks since my surgery and am able to use the hand a bit - but still in a sling for a few more weeks . Doing well, but this one handed thing is a pain in the ol butt!!!! I will say that the hubby is getting better at getting my hair into a ponytail without it looking like a three year old did it - he is such a trooper!!!! I will keep him!!!

A breath of fall

Hallo,

  Here in NW Florida we usually don't get much fall. This year we have had alot of cool weather but still not much fall color, its one of the things I miss about living back home in Nebraska.

So in the last few months I have done several fall themed paintings - this is the biggest one at 16H by 20 W. In addition to encaustic I have used oil sticks. I am starting to play with my hot pens a bit more too....

Point Havisu

  Lots of pictures with this post today. This encaustic wax painting is about 25 layers, followed by lots of carving, followed by more layers added on top of the 'rocks' for texture, and then about 10 more layers of clear wax with oil sticks to add the 'water'.
  The painting is 24 inches tall by 36 inches wide.
   The top 2 pictures are the final version one laying down and one standing upright - the upright one catches a lot of light and shine where the laying down one is more true to the colors and actual look of the painting.
  The third picture shows the carving in progress - the whole painting was layered to the level of the copper brown color and then carved back, leaving some high spots for rocks and rims of the pools at the top of the painting. I started with a base of about 4 layers plain wax followed by 3 to 4 layers of 7 colors.
   I carved back, leaving the layers exposed on the edges of the pools and rocks. Once I had the carving the way I wanted it, I added a couple layers of clear wax to the pool and stream areas as a base for the oil sticks.
  I used oil stick colors with more transparent colors like pthylo blue and green gold and a turquoise color. I did many layers here too - the oil stick melts nicely into the wax and then ever so often I added another clear layer of wax....
  The last 4 pics(as well as the first 2 at top) are the final version of this painting.

Koi

Hallo,
  Another encaustic wax painting for you today. This one is 12 by 12 inches - 1 inch deep onto a cradled wood panel(pretty much all of the encaustic is painted onto a wood panel)
  The first pic has about 10 layers to it already - about 4 layers base wax and then a layer of oil sticks, followed by layers of pan pastels and shellac with bronze mica powders in it - with some layers of plain wax inbetween….
  The second photo shows a couple more layers of pan pastels and shellac and then the first 2 koi fish. The koi fish on this painting are done with a stencil and pan pastels.
  And the last photo is alternating layers of wax, pan pastel, shellac with stenciled koi fish - hopefully making it look like the koi are at different depths of the water.
   BTW - the shellac once painted on has to be burned in to burn off the alcohol in it, and every layer of wax or pan pastel has to be heat set also - I usually use a torch - that way every layer is sealed to the layer beneath.
   This painting is going to a friend of mine!
