Firefly Garden

Hallo,

I had forgotten to post this one because she went to a show right after I finished her.

This is a 15 by 22 cyanotype on watercolor paper that I mounted to a cradled wood panel. I then added encaustic medium and colored it with pan pastels in several layers.

Lastly I added gold 'fireflies' with encaustic paint.

She is framed in a black float frame.

Moonlight on the Bay

Hallo,

Thought I would show you a couple in progress pictures with this one.  This first picture is the original cyanotype done with beach grasses, weeds and a horseshoe crab shell that I found. In addition to the cyanotype fluid for this wet cyanotype, I spritzed it with some vinegar diluted in water and put some soap bubbles on top too.

The next 2 pictures show how I water colored the grasses, weeds and shell.

I mounted the paper to a cradled panel and added a few layers of encaustic medium and then enhanced the water and the moon with a bit of pan pastels.

Framed in a black float frame it measures 16.5 inches wide by 23.5 inches tall and 2 inches deep.

Bay View

Hallo,

Calling this one 'Bay View'. This painting started out as a cyanotype print onto watercolor paper with some weeds and grasses I collected on the bay on morning on a walk with my pups and the hubby.

I then water colored the grasses and glued the paper to a cradled wood panel.

I then added several layers of encaustic medium. Next step was painting some grass and weeds on with encaustic paint. Lastly, I enhanced the sky and water with pan pastels.

I framed it with a black float frame. It measures 16.5 inches wide, 23.5 inches tall and 2 inches deep.

Foggy marsh

Hallo,

Love my weekend studio time. This is a painting I thought I finished last weekend, but all week long at work he kept talking to me, telling me he needed something more. Sometimes I really hate not being able to paint every day, it is sometimes hard to stay in the rhythm of a painting only working on the weekend. But sometimes it gives me a chance to step back and look at a painting for awhile and get a sense of what it needs.

The first photo is were this painting ended up last weekend and I was happy but the more I looked at it... I take pics of my paintings not only in progress but at the end of my weekend in the studio and look at the photos throughout the week. I feel like it keeps me in touch with the 'flow' of my paintings in progress so I can jump in quicker when the weekend comes.

The second photo is how this painting ended up yesterday at the end of the day and like a sigh or a big breath of fresh air, I KNOW he is now finished. Sometimes I get that feeling and sometimes I just have to look at it awhile longer.

I darkened some areas in the sky a touch and even more in the water to 'ground' the marsh grasses. I made the fog darker/thicker too and then added some grasses back in with the hot pen. The sky, water and fog were done/colored almost totally with pan pastels(I started the painting with a white/gray/light blue encaustic base). The grasses are encaustic paint with a fine tip hot pen.

Total all there are a ton of layers - the sky, water and fog is probable 8 to 9 layers - pan pastels, fuse, very light layer of medium and repeat. The grasses are about 10 layers total all -the fog pan pastel applications flattened the textures there a bit and then I would add more on top - several times.

The third marsh painting is in the works....

Circles of life

Hallo,

Another mixed media encaustic today - rubber stamps painted with watercolor and covered with several layers of clear encaustic and then several stencils with pan pastels.

This one is a bit more structured I guess is the word but was fun to do.

Ocean redo

Hallo,
Remember this painting?? Well I got it back from a show in Pensacola and even though I loved it, I felt like it 'needed' a bit of something...
Well I played with a bit and a few little jellyfish came over to swim.
I love it even more now!!!!

Ocean series - 12 by 12

 Hallo,
Last one in this series, this one measures 12 by 12 inches. This one started with 3 layers of plain encaustic and 2 or 3 of white encaustic wax. Next I added a layer of oil sticks.
Follows are several layers of shellac with mica powders, pan pastels, a bit of oil stick, fusing after each layer and adding another layer of clear wax every now and then.
I almost quit at the second picture as I really liked the way it was looking but decided to do just a bit more and am still happy with it.
Unlike the others in this series I didn't add any ink to this one. The sides are finished off with black encaustic.
All for now - a busy week here with work and errands and turn ins for 2 art shows.....oh and watching the hurricanes develop and which way they decide to go....

Ocean encaustics - 2

 Hallo,
2 more paintings in my latest series. Both of these are 11 inches wide by 14 inches tall.
They start with a base of 4 layers of encaustic and then a layer of oil sticks. After that are multiple layers of shellac with mica powders (burned in) and pan pastels with an occasional layer of clear encaustic.
I added some black ink at one point and wasn't really happy with it so they both got another layer of shellac and pan pastels and a final layer of clear encaustic. Some of the ink still shows but it adds another layer of interest....
The top 3 pics are the right hand painting in progression - the 4th pic are the 2 together - and the last 3 pics shows the left hand painting in progression.
I finished off the sides in black encaustic.

Ocean encaustics

 Hallo,
Popping in today to show you a big painting I just finished off. This one is 24 inches wide by 36 inches tall.
There are a lot of layers on this one - starting with a base of about 4 layers of encaustic wax and then a layer of oil sticks which is the first picture here.
I then added some bronze mica powders to shellac and did a shellac burn. Added pan pastels and fused, more pastels, fused, a layer of wax.....
All total there is about 3 layers of shellac, pastels and then clear wax, then I added some ink and one more layer of pan pastels, shellac and a final layer of clear wax...…
The side are finished in black encaustic.
All for today but a couple more post coming up as I did several in this series and colors - working them all at once (cooling times inbetween make working several at once easier)
